Murphy beds have been in existence since in regards to 1900, when William L. Murphy devised the patented mechanism to hide his bed away in the closet of his one room apartment while he entertained. The beds have been in use ever since, always cherished by city apartment dwellers and householders who necessitated an extra bed in a multipurpose room.

During World War II and directly afterwards, the beds dropped in popularity, basi because of the scarcity of steel, and then because people were moving out of the city to larger, suburban homes, and space was not at such a premium. In the decades of the fifties and sixties, the beds were mainly remembered as props in slap-stick comedy, or the place to hide the body in a mystery story.

Now, Murphy beds are experiencing resurgence, as professional persons move back into the cities and make their littler living spaces more functional. Many apartment dwellers are finding these beds already existent in older buildings, peculiarly in places like San Francisco, where the Murphy bed was invented, and where a good deal of Murphy beds were sold for the apartments built amidst the 1906 earthquake and World War II. Antique Murphy beds are now much sought after speech pieces and design focal points, as well as practical, still-functioning pieces of furniture.

Antique Murphy beds are also being sold in fine oldfashioned stores all over the country. Many of the initial mechanisms still function and the cabinetry used to give rise to the units may be rather beautiful. Buyers will have to remember, however, that a true Murphy bed is not going to be older than the invention, patented in 1900. The piece may be housed in a cabinet that is older than the patent, but the mechanism cannot be older than that. The buyer will have to be welleducated regarding the furniture of the amount of time as a whole, and regarding the mechanism itself. Intelligently purchased, these beds may be an investment and a functioning piece of furniture.

Great to keep your dresser neat and jewelry organized

After doing research, this product is one of those that is the same item found around the net at different prices and under different manufacturer’s names so do your homework for the best price. I purchased since it matched our existing bedroom furniture. Outside it is quality wood which is stained nicely. The quality is the same inside with the felt lining. Instructions were just bare minimum sketches, but easy enough to figure out how to hang. The pictures on the site make it self explanatory about how the jewelry fits inside, unfortunately there is a huge section on the inside door which seems to be wasted space. Maybe something goes there but there but without any instructions, I couldn’t figure it out.

Only issue we had was the mounting. Mounts simple enough with bracket on the wall and a pre-attached bracket on the back of the unit towards the top. Pick your place, mount bracket on wall and slide unit on bracket. Dowel rods in the bracket keep unit centered. There is no other mounting towards the bottom. The cabinet door has a strong magnet so when you pull it open the bottom also pulls away from the wall. Adding an additional screw or two through the bottom and into the wall fixes that. There is an indention on the side to open the cabinet door. Adding a pull on the front would make a nice addition and allow easier access. Other than that it is a nice piece to get your jewelry organized and keep your necklaces from tangling.
